Salk Institute mourns the loss of former Trustee Harvey P. White

LA JOLLA-The Salk Institute mourns the passing of Harvey P. White (1934-2025), a distinguished leader, philanthropist, and dedicated supporter of the Institute. White died on December 18, 2025, at the age of 91.

White served on the Salk Institute Board of Trustees from 2007 to 2016, providing thoughtful guidance and steadfast support during a period of growth and scientific advancement at the Institute. His service reflected a deep commitment to the power of science to improve human health and society.

White was widely known for his visionary leadership and entrepreneurial spirit as one of the seven co-founders of Qualcomm, where he held senior leadership roles, including president and vice chair. His contributions helped shape global wireless communications and firmly established San Diego as a center for technological innovation.

Beyond his transformative impact on the technology sector, White was deeply committed to advancing science, education, and the arts. Throughout his life, he served on numerous civic, educational, and philanthropic boards, bringing insight, integrity, and a long-term perspective to every organization he supported.

A devoted believer in education and community engagement, White was also a generous patron of the arts and a supporter of many local and national causes. Together with his wife, Sheryl, he championed institutions that fostered innovation, creativity, and opportunity.

"Harvey's remarkable career and dedication to discovery were matched by his generosity and sense of responsibility to the broader community," says Marna Whittington, chair of Salk's Board of Trustees. "We are grateful for his leadership and service to Salk, and his legacy will continue to inspire the Institute."

White is survived by his wife, Sheryl, his children, and his grandchildren. The Salk Institute extends its deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life and leadership.
