Ernst Leads Effort Condemning Hamas' Oct. 7 Attacks

WASHINGTON - On the second anniversary of the Oct. 7 terrorist attack on Israel that killed dozens of Americans, U.S. Senators Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and John Fetterman (D-Pa.) led a bipartisan resolution, including all Senate Republicans, condemning the Hamas terrorist attacks.

The resolution condemns Iran-backed Hamas' use of rape as a weapon of war, opposes the rise in antisemitic protests, supports the forever survival of Israel, and calls for the safe release of all the hostages, including the last two American hostages Omer Neutra and Itay Chen.

"Two years ago today, I awoke in the Middle East to horrific news - Israel was under attack by Iran-backed Hamas and Americans had been killed and taken hostage," said Ernst. "I immediately traveled into Israel to stand with our ally against Iran-backed terror. Since then, I traveled to the region seven times and met with our Middle East partners to bring our hostages home and end the war. Now that President Trump has restored American leadership on the world stage, I have renewed optimism and will continue to support his peace through strength vision, so another October 7 never happens."

The resolution is cosponsored by Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), John Thune (R-S.D.), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Tim Scott (R-S.C.), Jim Banks (R-Ind.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Katie Britt (R-Ala.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Bill Cassidy (R-La.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), John Curtis (R-Utah), Steve Daines (R-Mont.), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), LindseyGraham (R-S.C.), Bill Hagerty (R-Tenn.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Jon Husted (R-Ohio), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Jim Justice (R-W.Va.), John Kennedy (R-La.), Mike Lee (R-Utah), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), Roger Marshall (R-Kan.), Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Dave McCormick (R-Pa.), Ashley Moody (R-Fla.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio), Markwayne Mullin (R-Okla.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Ron Johnson (R-Wis.), Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.), Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), and Todd Young (R-Ind.)

Background:

On October 7, 2023, Ernst was in the Middle East and went into Israel just days after Iran-backed Hamas' attacks to show her support for our ally. Since then, she has kept up the pressure to bring the hostages home.

Following the attacks, Ernst led her colleagues in urging President Biden to focus his full attention on freeing American hostages taken by Hamas and supporting Israel's efforts to dismantle the threat of Hamas.

Since the attacks, Ernst has returned to the region seven times and met with regional leaders working to secure the release of the hostages and end the war in Gaza.
