Traffic access resumed following the removal of the previous bridge, backfilling of the bridge area, and reconstruction of the roadway.

PHILADELPHIA - The Streets Department announced the reopening of the East Hunting Park Bridge near Whitaker Avenue earlier this morning, Friday September 5, 2025.

This bridge fill-in project included:

  • The demolition and removal of the previous bridge structure
  • Backfilling the bridge area with earth fill
  • Utility relocation
  • Replacement of the roadway including resurfacing, pavement markings, and fencing.

The Streets Department Design Unit managed the project's design phase with design completed by Urban Engineers. Construction began on February 10, 2025 and has now been completed 7 months later with the reopening of Hunting Park Avenue between Whitaker Avenue and G Street. Managed by the Streets Department Construction Unit, this $1.7 million project was completed by South State Inc. The project was funded using a combination of State Act 13 and City Capital funds.

The Streets Department's mission is to keep Philadelphia moving safely. This project advances our goals by quickly and efficiently restoring a vital part of transportation infrastructure and the traffic network in North Philadelphia.
