Diplomatic Relations: Celebrating ‘The Diplomat’ Season 4 Around The World

Over four seasons, The Diplomat has amassed fans around the world. But the political thriller holds a special place in the hearts and minds (and watchlists) of policymakers and their aides, who can relate firsthand to the trials and tribulations Ambassador Kate Wyler (Emmy® nominee and executive producer Keri Russell) must navigate episode after episode.

So to celebrate the fourth season of the Emmy-winning series , which debuted October 15 on Netflix, we hosted four screenings of the Season 4 premiere across Brussels, Canberra, London and Washington D.C. in partnership with POLITICO. The guest list read like a cast of The Diplomat 's real-life counterparts: ministers, heads of communication, advisers, spokespeople and chiefs of staff.

The action kicked off on October 13 in London with a screening and drinks reception for 40 guests at the Soho Hotel, including Creative Industries Minister Ian Murray MP, and featuring an introduction by POLITICO UK Executive Editor, Allison Hoffman and Minister of State for Europe and North America, Stephen Doughty MP.

The following evening, 150 guests gathered at Palace Electric Cinemas Canberra in Australia's capital, for a screening and cocktail reception hosted by POLITICO Editor Ryan Heath.

Later that same night, we hosted guests at our Netflix office in Brussels for a screening and cocktail hour with opening remarks by POLITICO European Executive Editor Carrie Budoff Brown.

On October 15, series stars Russell and Rufus Sewell and creator/showrunner/writer/executive producer Debora Cahn traveled to Washington D.C. for a screening and conversation moderated by POLITICO Global Anchor, The Conversation host and Playbook co-author Dasha Burns for 200 guests at the US Navy Memorial Burke Theater.

"There were not a huge number of shows out there about the foreign service, and we're, at heart, fangirls, and I wanted to do it justice," said Cahn about her inspiration behind the series.

The Diplomat 's multi-country screening series was only fitting considering the show's expansive production footprint. Although past seasons have filmed primarily in the UK and the US, in Season 4, production also expanded to Italy, where a fictional G7 summit took place in the final two episodes of the season.

"This is absolutely meant to be a love letter to the foreign service," said Russell. "That's what we talked about from the very beginning. Those are the kernels that we love so much about the show, and certainly the arc of this season in particular."

Overall, the latest season of The Diplomat filmed in over 15 cities and towns across Italy, the UK and the US. In Italy, locations included Dimora Ghirlandaio in Impruneta, Villa Reale di Marlia in Marlia and the city of Lucca. In the UK, cameras rolled at Lancaster House in Westminster and Goldsmiths' Hall in London. And in the US, filming took place at Manhattan's Church of the Intercession and Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Briarcliff Manor. Read more about the show's filming locations here.

All four seasons of The Diplomat are now streaming - only on Netflix.
