Homicide Unit detectives are continuing to investigate Sunday's 2:30 a.m. physical altercation outside a 2nd Avenue North bar in downtown Nashville that led to the death of Torey Ward, 45, of Atlanta.
The investigation indicates Ward's girlfriend had an encounter inside the bar with Keith King Jr., 37, of Nashville, while Ward was in the bathroom. When Ward came out, a verbal argument ensued. Based on the argument, the entire group was asked to leave by bar staff. Once outside, a physical altercation began between Ward and King.
Based on witness accounts, it appears King punched and held Ward in a chokehold, which King reported was based off of fear for his own safety.
Ward's girlfriend reported she attempted to intervene in the altercation outside after witnessing Ward hit King several times in the chest while in the bar but was ultimately injured by an unknown female in King's group of friends.
Ward was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine cause of death. No charges have been filed at present against King as the investigation continues. Detectives will staff their findings with the District Attorney's Office.
