Parking lot improvements completed at Birnam Wood

The two-year long construction project to upgrade 27R, the parking lot adjacent to Birnam Wood, is now complete. The construction project included stormwater upgrades, stabilization of Sehome Hill, improving ADA accessibility, adding conduit for future EV chargers, sidewalks, and resulted in an increase in total available parking spaces available for students.

Transportation Services invested just under $5 million to complete this project. Revenue collected from parking permit sales and citations funds parking lot maintenance projects such as this. Transportation Services is a self-supported department and receives no state or University funding for operations. Departmental operations including parking lot maintenance, construction projects, and enforcement are fully funded by the department.

All remaining parking spaces in 27R will be awarded to students once the contractor fully vacates the project site in the coming days. Parking permit sales are based on seniority. For students, seniority is based on the number of completed credit hours. To add yourself to a waitlist for a parking permit, log onto the Parking Portal at transportation.wwu.edu. Parking permits are awarded weekly to those on waitlists.
