The public investiture celebrating a historic new chapter for the City of Detroit will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, at the Detroit Opera House, marking the swearing-in of Detroit's first woman mayor, Mary Sheffield. The investiture is free and open to the public and will also include the swearing-in of Detroit City Council Members, Detroit Police Commissioners and City Clerk Janice M. Winfrey.
"I am honored and humbled to soon take the oath as Detroit's next mayor," said Mayor-elect Sheffield. "It was important to me that we host the investiture in a space that allowed the public to attend. The people of this city have been with me every step of the way. This isn't just my moment-this is Detroit's moment and my administration will be the people's administration."
Hosting the public event at the Detroit Opera House allows Detroiters to meaningfully participate in the historic occasion, and reflects the Mayor-elect's commitment to inclusive leadership and collaboration with her colleagues and the community. The investiture will feature performances from Detroit's poet laureate Jessica Care Moore, the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences, Gospel star Kierra Sheard and Detroit Opera House soloist Brianna J. Robinson, celebrating Detroit's rich culture and community spirit. It will also be livestreamed on the City of Detroit's cable channel and social media channels to ensure citywide access.
Over the next 100 days, the Rise Higher Detroit transition will convene additional forums to engage Detroiters so their needs and voices are reflected in the Mayor-elect's plans for the city's future. To date, the Mayor-elect's Rise Higher Detroit website has received over 1,200 resumes and the transition team continues to interview candidates to fill key roles. Feedback around the community survey and the growing number of resume submissions are signs of just how excited people are to participate in and join the Sheffield Administration.
