Road Work to Begin on 500th St. and 40th Ave. in Summer 2025

Update: September 12, 2025
Stage 1: Cole Excavating has completed the grading portion of the project and the seeding and erosion control work will be completed by the end of the day.
Stage 2: Weather pending, beginning Monday, September 15, Ulland Brothers will begin paving on 40th Avenue from the Asmus Farm Supply Office south to 500th St. and then west to the existing pavement. They will begin with the east and south lanes. Access will be limited to Asmus Farm Supply facilities for intermittent periods of about 2 hours during the paving. Each lane will receive three lifts. Contact Asmus Farm Supply to coordinate deliveries.
Update: July 24, 2025
Weather pending, on August 4th, construction will begin on 500th Street and 40th Avenue between the cemetery east of Rake and Asmus Farm Supply. The road, shoulders, and ditches will be completely reshaped then the surface will be paved with asphalt with rock shoulders.
Electric and fiber optic relocations are complete.
Materials may be arriving the week of July 28th requiring short term traffic control during unloading.
Stage 1: Earthwork, culvert installation, road base, and erosion control. 3-5 weeks. During stage 1, the road may be closed to thru traffic, with access maintained for residents and businesses. The road will not always have rock surfacing. Short-term full road closures are necessary to install culverts under the road, but will be kept to a minimum.
Stage 2: Paving, shoulders, driveways, and seeding. 2-4 weeks. Stage 2 will follow stage 1, expected late August or September.
Update: February 6, 2025
Cole Excavating has been secured by Ulland Brothers to perform the earth work items on this project. Based on the contractor's tentative schedule, the earth work is expected to begin in late July and continue through mid August. Aggregate base and asphalt surfacing will begin mid August and continue through late August.
In addition to paving work on this project, Ulland Brothers will also pave R20 from Highway 9 to the Minnesota State Line and 30th Ave and 500th St. around Rake. This paving is tentatively scheduled for mid to late August.
Update: January 3, 2025
Electrical relocation has been delayed until spring.
A bid letting was held on December 13, 2024 and two bids were recieved. The low bidder was Ulland Brothers, Inc. of Albert Lea, MN in the amount of $1,591,601.85, which was 73% of the Engineer's Estimate of about $2.2 Million. The bid was accepted by the Board of Supervisors at the next meeting and contract execution is in progress.
Update: November 5, 2024
Electrical and fiber optic relocations are expected to begin this week weather-pending. Fiber optic pedestals near the entrance to Asmus Farm Supply Main Office and 40th/500th intersection will be moved east to the new road right-of-way line, appoximately 17 feet. New electrical lines will be bored and trenched into the ground on the west side of the road to eliminate poles and overhead lines. Final Plans are set to be approved by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. A bid letting will be set for December 13, 2024.
Update: August 20, 2024
The County Engineer's Office plans to pave 500th St. one mile east of Rake and 40th Ave. 1/2 mile north of 500th St. (just past Asmus Farm Supply) during the summer of 2025. The project includes utility relocations, re-grading the road and ditches, base stabilization, and new asphalt pavement.
The Board of Supervisors has secured $1,400,000 through Tax Increment Financing (TIF) to pay for the project.
