This year, Europe Day will be marked across the European Union through sport. The Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport, together with its European and national partners, is actively promoting physical activity, inclusion and connection through sport.
As part of the Sport celebrates Europe Day initiative, numerous sports and para-sports events will take place across Slovenia from 8 to 10 May, bringing people, local communities and European values together through physical activity.
The initiative is jointly organised by the Ministry of the Economy, Tourism and Sport, the European Commission Representation in Slovenia, the Olympic Committee of Slovenia, and the Sports Federation for the Disabled of Slovenia - Paralympic Committee of Slovenia, with the support of national sports federations and numerous local sports clubs across the country.
In Ljubljana, Europe Day celebrations on 8 and 9 May will include the Trio Race and the Walk Along the Wire. At European Union information points in Vič, Fužine and Trg republike, visitors will be able to take part in interactive sports activities, challenges, games and quizzes designed to bring European values to life in an active and experiential way.
The events in Ljubljana are organised by the European Commission Representation in Slovenia, CMEPIUS and the MOVIT Institute in cooperation with the City Municipality of Ljubljana and Timing Ljubljana.
From 4 to 9 May, sport will take centre stage across Slovenia through two key programmes:
On sports grounds, courts, green spaces, in nature and in sports halls across Slovenia, numerous participants will be part of a shared European movement that brings together sport, health and community.
The European model of sport is based on broad access to sport and its development from the grassroots level upwards. The European Union uses funding to support member states in developing sports infrastructure and programmes, and in making sport more accessible to all generations.
In Slovenia, several major investments in sports infrastructure have been carried out with the help of European co-financing.
Sport plays an important role in improving health and quality of life, which is why the European Week of Sport, held every September, encourages Europeans to engage in regular physical activity.
