HARMONY ACROSS HORIZONS: RAYA RADIANCE ILLUMINATES CULTURAL UNITY AT USM

Posted on 12 March 2026.

USM PENANG, 12 March 2026 - The spirit of cultural harmony and international friendship came alive at Dataran Merah during Harmony Across Horizons: Raya Radiance, a vibrant programme held as part of Orientation Week Spring 2026.

Organised by the USM Buddies in collaboration with the International Office (IO), the event gathered local and international students in a colourful celebration of global cultures and shared traditions.

With 101 exchange students representing 21 countries, the programme transformed the university space into a lively platform where cultures intersected through performances, storytelling, and meaningful social interactions.

The event reflects Universiti Sains Malaysia's commitment to strengthening internationalisation within the campus community while encouraging deeper connections between local and international students.

This year's theme, "Raya Radiance," was chosen in conjunction with the approaching Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

The venue was beautifully decorated with festive Raya elements, symbolising the inclusive Malaysian tradition where celebrations are embraced by people of all races and backgrounds.

Participants arrived dressed in their traditional attire, further amplifying the colourful multicultural atmosphere.

According to Harmony Across Horizons Advisor, Mr. Mugilan Ravi, the programme was designed to serve as a bridge between cultures and perspectives.

He explained that the name Harmony Across Horizons was conceptualised two years ago with the intention of creating a platform where students from different nations could interact beyond their usual cultural circles.

The idea, he noted, reflects the belief that harmony transcends divisions and encourages students to embrace diversity as a shared human experience.

Through the participation of students from 21 countries, the event allowed both local and international students to exchange cultural expressions while broadening their understanding of the world.

Mugilan further emphasised that initiatives such as this transform the concept of global citizenship into a tangible experience.

"Universities often speak about nurturing global citizens, but programmes like Harmony Across Horizons allow students to truly experience that idea. They do not only observe cultures, they interact with them, learn from them, and share their own."

Beyond the vibrant performances and festive atmosphere, he highlighted that the programme also carries a deeper message of tolerance and understanding.

"When students encounter cultures, religious practices, and ways of life that differ from their own, they begin to appreciate humanity beyond differences. Ultimately, the goal is to encourage openness, mutual respect, and the ability to coexist harmoniously in an increasingly interconnected world," he said.

The success of the event was made possible by the dedication of 28 USM Buddies, led by Project Director, Fiona Anand Shah, who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to coordinate the programme and ensure a meaningful experience for all participants.

For USM Buddies President, Sharifah Nur Nabilah Syed Suhairi, the most rewarding aspect of the event was witnessing the positive impact it had on the international students.

She shared that the joy and excitement displayed by the participants made the months of preparation worthwhile.

She said, "Seeing the smiles of our international students is the most rewarding moment for us. When we interact with them after the programme, we can feel their excitement and appreciation. It shows that the event has truly created a sense of belonging."

She also described Harmony Across Horizons as a genuine representation of internationalisation within the university.

According to her, the programme provides a space where cultures from around the world are not only showcased but also experienced collectively, allowing both local and international students to immerse themselves in each other's traditions.

The spirit of Harmony Across Horizons was perhaps best reflected in the experiences shared by the international students themselves.

Sema, one of the participants, expressed her appreciation for the welcoming atmosphere created by the organisers.

"I must say the event went very well. We received such good energy from the USM Buddies, and when we receive that kind of energy, it makes us feel like continuing our years here with the same spirit. We also get to learn about Malaysian culture, which is very rich in its own way, as well as the cultures of our other friends. Overall, it has been a very great experience."

For Danielfrom Switzerland, the event offered a unique opportunity to witness cultures through artistic expression.

"What I found touching about seeing people from over 21 countries was that we could experience their culture from their own perspective - through their dance performances and the harmony they shared on stage. It allowed me to see their traditions almost from behind the curtains and understand what a ritual might look like in the form of art. It made me feel very welcomed and grateful to share such a meaningful experience with kind-hearted people."

Participants from Japan also shared their memorable experiences during the event. Chihiro, one of the performers, described the joy of presenting Japanese traditions to the international audience.

"We had a great chance to introduce our traditional cultures to all the exchange students. As a Japanese student, I was able to showcase traditions from four prefectures such as Osaka, Okinawa, Tokyo, and Kyoto. What we enjoyed the most was when other exchange students joined us during the performance. It made the experience even more joyful."

Her fellow participant Nodokareflected on how the programme highlighted the multicultural richness of Malaysia.

"Seeing so many performances and cultures together was very interesting for me. It showed the wholesome diversity of Malaysian culture."

The evening concluded with a communal iftar dinner following the Maghrib Adhan, bringing everyone together around a shared table.

Guests were treated to beloved Malaysian festive dishes such as rendang, ketupat, pastries, and teh tarik, offering international students an authentic taste of Malaysian culinary culture and the warm hospitality associated with Hari Raya celebrations.

Ultimately, Harmony Across Horizons: Raya Radiance was more than just a cultural showcase. It served as a meaningful platform for building friendships, encouraging intercultural dialogue, and strengthening the spirit of unity within the diverse community of Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Through moments of shared performances, conversations, and laughter, the event successfully embodied its core message; that harmony can flourish when cultures meet with openness, curiosity, and mutual respect.
