Marquette and partner WAICU private universities generate $5.4 billion impact on Wisconsin economy

The 22 private, nonprofit institutions that make up the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities - a group that includes Marquette - have a direct, positive economic, workforce and civic impact across the state.

A recent economic impact study commissioned by WAICU revealed that private colleges generated $5.4 billion for Wisconsin's economy in 2024-25.

Other highlights of the study include:

  • $2.71 billion in direct spending from college operations and purchases by students, employees, and visitors, plus an additional $2.72 billion in indirect and induced impacts rippling through other sectors
  • WAICU member institutions rank among Wisconsin's top 10 employers, with more than 18,600 faculty and staff directly employed and an estimated 39,242 jobs supported statewide through indirect and induced effects
  • Approximately 236,000 alumni live and work in Wisconsin, contributing $41 billion in economic activity and $7.4 billion in annual tax revenue
  • 12,300 degrees are awarded annually by WAICU institutions, preparing graduates for high-demand careers
  • Despite their nonprofit status, WAICU institutions generate $788 million in federal, state, and local tax revenue, including sales, income, and payroll taxes
  • Private colleges deliver strong returns on investment, leveraging state tax dollars at a ratio of 161:1

Marquette is joined in WAICU by Alverno College, Bellin College, Carroll University, Carthage College, Concordia University Wisconsin, Edgewood College, Herzing University, Lakeland University, Lawrence University, Marian University, the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, the Milwaukee School of Engineering, Mount Mary University, Nashotah House Theological Seminary, Northland College, Ripon College, St. Norbert College, Viterbo and Wisconsin Lutheran College.
