AUSTIN - Today the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) hosted its annual White Cane Day celebration. The event's goal is to help to educate the public about blindness, celebrate the independence of the blind and visually impaired community, and honor their contributions.
"We're honored to celebrate White Cane Day as a symbol of inclusivity for people who are blind or visually impaired," said TWC Chairman Joe Esparza. "By partnering with Texas employers to expand job training, internships, and other educational opportunities, we can empower Texans with disabilities to gain competitive skills and increase their employability."
The celebration was held at the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI). Local leaders spoke about the importance of recognizing the accomplishments of individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
"On White Cane Day, we honor the independence and resilience of Texans who are blind or visually impaired, remembering the white cane is more than a tool - it is a symbol of mobility and opportunity," said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto TreviƱo III. "Through our Vocational Rehabilitation programs, TWC remains committed to ensuring every Texan has the access, training, and support they need to reach their full potential."
Additional program festivities included a performance of the national anthem by the TSBVI choir, a petting zoo, and more than 35 exhibitor booths.
"I greatly appreciate the opportunity to join the White Cane Day celebration, highlighting the talents, contributions, and abilities of Texans who are blind or visually impaired," said TWC Commissioner Representing Public Brent Connett. "Texans of all abilities strengthen our workforce and reinforce the Lone Star State's reputation as the best place to live and work."
The public was also invited to take part in two White Cane Day marches across Austin. The annual celebration, held during National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), is part of TWC's Texas HireAbility Campaign to promote the benefits of hiring people with disabilities.
