Amplify Asia and Myanmar Media Program, run by MDIF with the aim of helping independent media across South and Southeast Asia build business capacity and financial sustainability, have jointly launched a report titled Defying Expectations: Essays on innovation, resilience, and sustainability in independent media across South and Southeast Asia.
Written by media practitioners, editors, media coaches and consultants who have actively worked with MDIF's partner outlets in the region, the report brings together articles on how independent media organizations are adapting, innovating and building resilience in increasingly difficult political and financial environments.
The essays explore a broad range of themes affecting the future of independent journalism in Asia, including audience-backed revenue models, digital transformation, AI integration, exile media sustainability, newsroom leadership, diversity and inclusion and innovative storytelling formats. Together, they offer grounded insights into how smaller independent media entities are navigating shrinking donor support, political pressure, changing digital ecosystems and growing threats to press freedom while continuing to serve the public interest.
One important highlight is a rare insight into how exile media from Myanmar and Vietnam are successfully building loyal communities and generating revenue even while operating under extraordinary constraints.
This publication adds to MDIF's fundamental argument about independent media being essential civic institutions, especially in fragile environments. Their financial survival and sustainability is critical not only for press freedom, but for ensuring continued public access to reliable information.
