Shining a light on Earth Day, the Consumers Energy Foundation named Rose Township as a recipient of their 2026 Planet Award winners today, providing $105,000 to support restoration at Rose Ponds in Oakland County.
The grant will fund the Rose Township Parks Restoration Project, improving the natural ecosystem of more than 40 acres, removing invasive species and restoring native habitats, including wildlife. This will include the planting of 400 native trees, 3,000 shrubs and groundcovers, and improving the quality of 3.5 million gallons of water.
The Consumers Energy Foundation will act as the sole funder of the project, enhancing the foundation's charge to protect and preserve the environment.
"This Planet Award honors a deep commitment to the meaningful and impactful work of community organizations in keeping our environments cleaner, healthier, and protected for future generations," said Brandon Hofmeister, president of the Consumers Energy Foundation. "Through collaboration, innovation, and a shared responsibility to the communities we serve, we can make positive change to reduce environmental deterioration and establish sustainable practices for the longevity of our ecosystems."
Founded in 1837, Rose Township oversees its parks system, maintaining free and accessible public spaces for the community. The restoration project will also feature volunteer opportunities, enriching educational opportunities and hands-on activities.
"We are incredibly honored to receive this recognition and funding in support of the restoration of our parks. This investment reinforces the importance of the work ahead and our ongoing commitment to environmental conservation," said Brad Stilwell, Rose Township supervisor. "We're dedicated to continuing to build solutions that make a lasting impact on our community and ensure a healthier environment for us all."
The Planet Awards are the first of three signature grant programs offered annually by the Consumers Energy Foundation in support of Michigan nonprofits, municipalities and educational institutions. The Foundation is currently accepting Letters of Intent for the 2026 People Awards, its signature award geared towards projects that strengthen education, workforce development and pathways to self-sufficiency.
