New Data Shows Need for Immediate Action from Congress to Extend Enhanced Premium Tax Credits

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Anthony Wright, executive director of Families USA, today released a statement following the release of the Census Bureau's 2024 Poverty, Income, and Health Insurance Data.

"The Census data released today shows the progress we've made as a country in expanding coverage to more Americans than ever before. This point of pride about increased access to affordable coverage is coupled with concern that this is likely a peak before people start losing coverage, given policy choices by this Congress and the Trump Administration."

"This data vividly illustrates what's at stake as enhanced premium tax credits that help Americans afford health coverage are set to expire this year and as states start to grapple with President Trump's health care cuts going into effect in the coming years. More Americans are covered today than ever in part because 22 million Americans take advantage of the tax credits that are set to expire if Congress reverses course. Republican Congressional leadership extended tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy, but explicitly rejected multiple amendments to extend tax credits that would help working-class families cover the cost of health insurance. If these enhanced health care tax credits expire, millions of Americans will enter open enrollment on November 1, seeing their premiums and out-of-pocket costs skyrocket, with over four million falling off coverage and being priced out of any plan. Between the Medicaid cuts and Congressional inaction on affordability assistance, the coverage gains detailed in this Census report over the last several years will be erased. Congress needs to undo the damage of their decisions and lower costs for consumers as promised, by making these tax credits permanent."
