City of Cedar Rapids Recognizes “Support the Fight Against Food Insecurity Day” With Proclamation, Call to Action

The City of Cedar Rapids recognized November 4, 2025, as Support the Fight Against Food Insecurity Day through proclamation at the November 4 City Council meeting.

Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell read the proclamation recognizing the growing challenge of food insecurity across Eastern Iowa. The proclamation further highlighted the essential work of the HACAP Food Reservoir, which distributes food to nearly 300 local partner agencies, including pantries, shelters, and meal sites that serve thousands of families who depend on reliable access to nutritious food.

"Food insecurity touches every corner of our community," said Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell. "We are proud to recognize the incredible work so many in our community are doing to ensure nobody goes hungry - and we are using this opportunity to encourage residents to support our local food bank's growing needs."

Councilmember Dale Todd moved to amend the Council Meeting Agenda to include the proclamation, acknowledging the State's open meeting law requirement for 24-hour notice of agenda items, and clarifying the addition was permissible as the proclamation did not affect any official City business or action taking place at the meeting.

"Time is of the essence in calling Cedar Rapids businesses, donors, and residents to action to raise awareness around the need for support for our local food banks," said Councilmember Todd.

Community members are encouraged to participate by donating to HACAP, volunteering at local food pantries, and raising awareness about the impact of food insecurity in Cedar Rapids and surrounding areas.
