D.A. Bragg Announces Guilty Plea Of Woman For Murder Of Her Aunt In East Harlem

September 25, 2025

Manhattan District Attorney Alvin L. Bragg Jr. today announced the guilty plea of KRISTIE MIRO, 34, for fatally beating her aunt, 56-year-old Ana Nieves, in her own apartment in East Harlem in February 2022. MIRO pleaded guilty in New York State Supreme Court to one count of Murder in the Second Degree. Under the terms of her plea, she is expected to be sentenced on November 12, 2025 to a promised sentence of 16 years-to-life in state prison.

"Kristie Miro committed a brutal and deadly act of family violence that took her aunt's life," said District Attorney Bragg. "Losing any loved one to violence is incredibly painful, and unimaginable at the hands of another family member. I hope this measure of accountability can bring some comfort to Ms. Nieves' loved ones, who continue to endure the effects of this senseless tragedy."

According to court documents and statements made on the record, and as admitted in the defendant's guilty plea, MIRO lived with her aunt in Ms. Nieves' apartment in a building near East 100th Street between 3rd and Lexington Avenues. On February 9, 2022, at approximately 4:30 p.m., Miro's cousin visited the apartment. Visibly upset and holding a hammer, MIRO shared that her girlfriend broke up with her. As the conversation continued, MIRO mentioned that Ms. Nieves wanted MIRO out of the apartment. Ms. Nieves was present in the apartment at the time of the visit. Later that night, Miro's cousin and Ms. Nieves left to attend a party.

In the early morning hours of February 10, 2022, Miro's cousin and Ms. Nieves left the party separately. Throughout the rest of the day, Miro's cousin was unable to reach Ms. Nieves and eventually asked three of her friends to conduct a wellness check at Ms. Nieves' the next day. MIRO answered the door and repeatedly said her aunt was not home.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., a resident of the building contacted law enforcement to conduct a wellness check. During the wellness check, an officer spoke to MIRO, who continued to say she was alone in the apartment and did not know her aunt's whereabouts. Miro's cousin arrived at the building and began arguing with MIRO about Ms. Nieves. The officer eventually called the NYPD's Emergency Services Unit to help open the apartment door because the lock was drilled out.

Once officers gained access to the apartment, they found Ms. Nieves unresponsive and fully clothed inside the bathtub, in blood-covered clothing she was seen wearing to the party. MIRO had fatally beaten her aunt with a hammer, which was found in MIRO's bedroom along with blood-covered clothing and cleaning gloves.

MIRO was arrested on February 13, 2022.

Assistant D.A.s Joel Seidemann (Trial Bureau 30) and Michael Perez (Human Trafficking Unit) are handling the prosecution of this case, under the supervision of Assistant D.A. Erin Tierney (Chief of Trial Bureau 30) and Executive D.A. Lisa DelPizzo (Chief of the Trial Division). Former Investigative Analyst Karen Niremberg provided valuable assistance in this case.

D.A. Bragg thanked the NYPD, particularly Detective Sean Degnan and the other officers of the 23rd Precinct.
