Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt announces
KCEE students receive financial literacy scholarships
Topeka, Kan. - Kansas Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt, today, announced three participants in Kansas Council for Economic Education (KCEE) programs as winners of a financial literacy essay scholarship contest sponsored by the Securities Division of the Kansas Department of Insurance.
The Department granted $10,000 to KCEE designated for a financial literacy essay contest in which the top three KCEE student essays split a share of the grant in scholarship funds.
The scholarship winners are:
1st Place, $5,000 - Alexis Licklider, Goddard High School
2nd Place, $3,000 - Alisa Saycocie, Olathe South High School
3rd Place, $2,000 - Karrington Crenshaw, Andover Central High School
"We're proud to recognize students who are already thinking critically about money management and consumer protection," said Commissioner Vicki Schmidt. "These essays highlight that KCEE students are developing practical skills that will empower them to make sound financial decisions and support lifelong financial well-being."
"We are grateful for the partnership of the Kansas Department of Insurance and echo Commissioner Vicki Schmidt in recognizing these outstanding students and educators," said Charlene Nichols, Executive Director of KCEE. "Learning how to spot and avoid fraud and scams is an essential skill for life. Resources such as SmartInvestKS.gov help us equip teachers with the tools they need to prepare Kansas students for these ever-changing risks."
The first-place essay will join two other winners from Junior Achievement and Jobs for America's Graduates-Kansas to compete for the overall winner of the essay contest and an additional scholarship of $5,000.
