UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres will host a Climate Summit in New York on 24 September as part of the UN General Assembly week. The aim of the event is to boost climate work in individual countries. Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala will represent Finland at the summit.
"More ambitious measures will be needed especially in large economies in order that we do not lose sight of the targets set in the Paris Agreement. It is also important that the EU could update its contributions before the Climate Conference in Belém," Minister of Climate and the Environment Sari Multala says.
The EU environment and climate ministers met in Brussels on Thursday and reached an understanding of the EU's message to the UN Climate Summit in New York. In its Letter of Intent the EU declares that it will reduce emissions by 66.25-72.5% by 2035. Agreement on the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) will be sought before the Climate Conference in Belém. The Paris Agreement requires each party to update their Nationally Determined Contributions every five years, and the next round of submissions is due just ahead of the COP30 Climate Conference in Belém.
Finland's delegation at the UN General Assembly week will be led by President of the Republic Alexander Stubb and, besides Minister Multala, the deputy heads of the delegation are Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Tavio and Minister of Social Security Sanni Grahn-Laasonen.
Besides the Climate Summit, Minister Multala will participate in several other events during the UN General Assembly week and the New York Climate Week. The topics include the energy transition, carbon capture and the role of the Arctic region. At the Climate Summit Minister Multala will participate in a high-level dialogue on preparedness for natural catastrophes and extreme weather events caused by climate change.
On the eve of the summit, Minister Multala will participate in the meeting of the High Ambition Coalition, which will issue a common declaration to support the preparations for the COP30 Climate Conference. The minister's programme also includes bilateral meetings with leaders of other countries and organisations. At the meetings Minister Multala will promote Finnish climate solutions and make them better known on the international export market.
