Aerospace engineer working to reduce jet noise

The loud roar of a jet engine can have far-reaching consequences, from hearing damage among aircraft carrier deck crews to noise pollution around airports and stress on aircraft components. Kaurab Gautam, a PhD student in aerospace engineering at the University of Cincinnati, is working to reduce this noise.

A member of the Gas Dynamics and Propulsion lab, Gautam's research focuses on understanding supersonic jet flow and acoustics to develop jet noise mitigation techniques. Recently, he was named Graduate Student Engineer of the Month by the College of Engineering and Applied Science for this work.

Why did you choose UC? What drew you here?

I chose the University of Cincinnati because of its strong reputation in aerospace engineering. I was fascinated to learn that Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, was a professor here. While exploring the aerospace engineering department's website, I found incredible research opportunities in high-speed propulsion systems. Additionally, the city itself was a major draw. I had seen winter-wonderland-esque pictures of Cincinnati covered in snow, and reading about the Ohio River in multiple popular novels gave the area a historical appeal that really attracted me.

Why did you choose your field of study?

I have been fascinated by high-speed propulsion since my undergraduate years. Although I didn't have the option to major strictly in aerospace engineering back then, I studied mechanical engineering with a focus on aerospace and fluid dynamics. When it came time for graduate school, I came across the work of Ephraim Gutmark, PhD, on high-speed propulsion systems. His research instantly resonated with me, and I have been working in his lab on high-speed propulsion since I came to UC.

Briefly describe your research work. What problems do you hope to solve?

My research focuses on aeroacoustics and supersonic jet noise reduction. Specifically, I am developing efficient jet noise reduction systems that minimize the thrust penalty. The primary problem I want to solve is mitigating the intense acoustic footprint generated by military aircraft. This extreme noise has significant implications for the health of carrier deck personnel, can lead to the acoustic fatigue and failure of aircraft engine components, and causes noise pollution in communities near airports. This work inspires me because it bridges the gap between highly complex high-speed flow dynamics and tangible, real-world engineering solutions.

What are some of the most impactful experiences during your time at UC?

Serving as a graduate assistant at the P&G Digital Accelerator @ UC has been incredibly impactful, allowing me to apply computational flow studies in a unique, consumer-product context. Within the college, acting as a campus representative for the Aerospace Engineering Graduate Student Association and serving as a technical judge for undergraduate projects at the annual CEAS EXPO have been rewarding ways to connect with and support the engineering community here.

What are a few of your accomplishments of which you are most proud?

I am incredibly honored to have received the Gordon C. Oates Air Breathing Propulsion Graduate Award from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), as well as the Professor Kirti Ghia Endowed Graduate Student Scholarship. On a slightly different note, placing second in the Art in Science Competition at the Dayton-Cincinnati Aerospace Sciences Symposium was a very fun and unique milestone that let me showcase the artistic side of my scientific research.

When do you expect to graduate? What are your plans after earning your degree?

I am planning to graduate in the spring of 2027. After earning my degree, I am looking forward to joining the industry in an applied research role.

Do you have any other hobbies, experiences, or involvements you want to share?

I am a massive soccer fan (specifically, an FC Barcelona and FC Cincinnati fan). I am always open to soccer-related activities, whether that means watching a game, getting out on the pitch myself, or heading down to TQL Stadium to catch a match. I also love playing table tennis in my spare time.
