George Washington University President Ellen M. Granberg led a small university delegation to South Korea at the beginning of June, extending and deepening GW's longstanding relationship with alumni and partners in the region while exploring new connections for student exchange and research collaboration.
"As the first GW president to visit South Korea since 2012, it was especially meaningful for me to meet our successful and enthusiastic GW alumni in Seoul and-through them-to see the tremendous impact GW has around the world," said President Granberg. "In convening our alumni and strengthening research and student exchange pathways, this visit advances our Strategic Framework in multiple ways and strengthens the longstanding connections GW has with South Korea."
As part of the visit, the president joined an alumni reception with about 125 GW alumni, families and friends at the JW Marriott in Seoul.
The itinerary included visits to Ewha Womans University, Korea University and Dongguk University as well as a tour and dinner at the Audeum Audio Museum, hosted by museum founder, alumnus and former GW parent Mongjin Chung, M.B.A. '86. Granberg also spoke to the Korea Herald about how GW and Korean universities can jointly address emerging opportunities and challenges in areas including artificial intelligence.
The university's historic and institutional ties to Korea include the Institute for Korean Studies at the Elliott School of International Affairs, which annually hosts 10 to 12 visiting scholars, as well as ongoing engagement efforts led by the Office of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Office of International Programs. Dozens of GW students study abroad in Korea every year, and more than 1,000 university alumni are located there.
