Earlier this week, The House Appropriations Committee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies advanced its fiscal year (FY) 2026 bill, proposing a six percent cut to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, a roughly 20 percent cut to the CDC, and a 15 percent cut to the U.S. Department of Education. Despite these reductions, advocacy by ASPPH and our members helped secure key wins for academic public health, including protection of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) budget and dedicated support for the Fogarty International Center (FIC).
In a statement, ASPPH expressed gratitude for the strong support of NIH, while raising deep concern about the proposed $1.7 billion cut to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), elimination of Prevention Research Centers, and reductions to other vital workforce and preparedness programs.
ASPPH continues to urge Congress to align final legislation with the Senate bill to safeguard essential investments in public health.
