EU Ambassador to the United Kingdom visits Guernsey

Thursday 30 October 2025

The EU Ambassador to the United Kingdom, His Excellency Pedro Serrano, has visited Guernsey this week. Ambassador Serrano has been in post since November 2022, and this was both his first official visit to the island and the first visit of an EU Ambassador.

During his time in Guernsey, the Ambassador met with the President of the Policy & Resources Committee, Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, and other senior figures in Guernsey's government, including the Presidents of the Committee for Economic Development, the Committee for the Environment & Infrastructure and the Committee for Education, Sport & Culture, to discuss areas such as financial services and the economy, environmental initiatives including offshore wind, UK-EU relations, and cultural projects between Guernsey and the EU. The Ambassador also met with stakeholders representing financial services bodies and cultural organisations within the island.

The meetings underscored the enduring relationship between Guernsey and the EU, highlighting mutual interests in economic collaboration as well as discussing aspects of the UK-EU 'reset' negotiations currently underway that could affect the island. The Ambassador also met with His Excellency the Lieutenant-Governor, the Bailiff and other representatives from the island's community.

The Ambassador's visit gave him an insight into the history and culture of the island, through visits to Castle Cornet, where he fired the noon day gun, and to Candie Museum, where he was able to view the current exhibitions of work by Chris George and David Robilliard.

Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez said:

"It was a great pleasure to welcome His Excellency Pedro Serrano to Guernsey this week for his first official visit to the island.

"Guernsey's strong relationships with the EU and its institutions have always been important to us, and as a small jurisdiction at a time of geopolitical uncertainty, good co-operation with our geographic neighbours is more important than ever. As well as participating in the UK-EU Trade and Co-operation Agreement, we also have strong bilateral relationships with EU Member States, particularly France, and our third country status in areas such as financial services are of particular value to our economy. We are working closely with the UK to ensure that Guernsey's interests are taken into account in the UK-EU reset negotiations, so that we can benefit from any changes and improvements.

"I am pleased that the Ambassador had the opportunity to meet with representatives from across government and industry while he was in the island. Conversations included not just business and economic ties between us, but also our history and the many cultural projects that are underway to strengthen our relationships with our European neighbours.

"Strengthening the relationship between Guernsey and the EU will help our people and our businesses to work even more productively with our close European neighbours for the benefits of all our jurisdictions, in what is fair to describe as a win-win. The conversations with the Ambassador to that end were positive, practical and forward-looking."
