Dan Sanford, executive director of Boise State University's Center for Teaching and Learning, recently published an essay in Inside Higher Ed examining the growing use of artificial intelligence-based tutoring in higher education.
In the article, "AI Tutoring and the Cost of Convenience," Sanford argues that while AI tutoring platforms offer scalability and around-the-clock access, they cannot replace the relational benefits of peer-led tutoring. Drawing on learning science and peer tutoring research, the essay treats tutoring as a fundamentally human practice that supports persistence and belonging.
Sanford leads campus-wide faculty development efforts focused on evidence-based teaching, student success and the responsible use of AI in teaching and learning. The essay appears in Inside Higher Ed's "Views" section and contributes to national conversations about AI and student support.
