Public Art Explores Human Connection through Land and Heritage

The City of St. Albert is pleased to announce that the first Public Art bus hits the roads this September! This project aims to bring public art into the communities of St. Albert and Edmonton, providing a visual art experience to transit users, pedestrians and travellers on the road.

Last Spring, a Call for Artists was issued asking for applications for a Public Art project that would see an artist create work for the exterior of a bus in response to a chosen theme. Linda M. Wright, a Gwich'in artist originally from Inuvik, Northwest Territories who now resides in Edmonton, Alberta was chosen by a selection committee for this project.

Artist, Linda M. Wright

Through her art practice, Linda sustains her connection to the land and is strongly influenced by the beauty of nature. The narrative within her work highlights traditional knowledge, the legends and stories of Indigenous people, and the importance of caring for our environment.

For this project, Linda chose to create artwork around the theme, Connections Made in Public Places. Her painting, Weaving Connections to Land and Heritage wraps the exterior of a City of St. Albert transit bus for the next year and we hope when you see it out in the community, you will reflect on how it speaks to the connections made in your life.

In addition to the exterior artwork, Linda also provided 10 original artworks for the bus's interior panels, each of which aligns with a priority area identified by the City's Community Social Needs Assessment.

The identified priority areas are:

  • Aging in Place
  • Child and Youth Development
  • Civic Involvement and Volunteerism
  • Community Connectedness
  • Community Safety
  • Family and Gender Based Violence
  • Housing and Homelessness
  • Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility
  • Mental Health and Addiction
  • Poverty

The Public Art bus will be officially unveiled on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On September 30, join City employees and the community as we walk from Mission Park and loop back around to Kâkesimokamik/The Healing Garden. Stay for guest speakers, Knowledge Keepers, performers, artisans, exhibits, food vendors and more. The bus will be on site at Mission Park for visitors to explore and reflect on how Linda's art speaks to them. We encourage attendees to wear orange to honour the thousands of survivors of residential schools.
