(Columbus, Ohio) - Majority Whip Nick Santucci (R-Niles) is pleased to share that he recently voted in support of House Bill 88, which works to enhance public safety for Ohioans.
House Bill 88 comes as a result of the staggering increase in drug overdoses, specifically fentanyl poisoning, in Ohio and throughout the United States. According to the Ohio Department of Health, in 2023, illicit fentanyl or fentanyl analogs were involved in 78% of unintentional drug overdose deaths in Ohio, often in combination with other drugs.
Key provisions of the bill are as follows:
"I proudly voted to co-sponsor Ohio House Bill 88 because the safety and future of our communities demand nothing less," said Majority Whip Santucci. "This legislation - strengthening penalties for drug and human trafficking, expanding our ability to root out organized crime, and mandating fentanyl-prevention education in our schools and colleges - represents a serious, common-sense response to a growing crisis. I have long advocated for stricter penalties for individuals who participate in these horrific activities, and HB 88 reflects that commitment. My Human Trafficking Prevention Act perfectly complements this legislation by further equipping Ohio to identify, prevent, and punish trafficking at every level. Together, these efforts reaffirm our commitment to public safety, protect the vulnerable, and safeguard the health and security of future generations. I will continue to stand with law enforcement, educators, and Ohio families to build a safer, more secure future for our state."
House Bill 88 now moves to the Ohio Senate for further consideration.
