Federal Government Shutdown: What Alexandria Residents Need to Know

With no federal budget agreement in place, the federal government shutdown began at midnight October 1. The City of Alexandria is prepared to support residents, workers, and businesses who may be affected by the current government shutdown.

Alexandria is home to thousands of federal employees, servicemembers, contractors, and others who rely on federally funded programs and services. We know that federal government shutdowns - particularly those that last a long time - can create disruptions for families and businesses. The City's priority is to minimize the local impact and connect residents to support where needed.

Here's what you should know:

  • City Services Will Continue: The City of Alexandria remains open. Trash pickup, public libraries, street maintenance, and parks will continue operating as usual. Emergency services and weather alerts are fully operational.
  • Support Is Available: The City is offering short-term relief opportunities and resources, and connecting impacted residents and businesses to available resources.
  • You Can Ask for Enforcement Relief: The City will offer extended payment plans for people directly impacted by the federal government shutdown. While penalties and interest will accrue, this flexibility will help defer the immediate outlay of cash.
  • Housing Support is Available: Under Virginia law, federal employees and contractors are protected from eviction or foreclosure during a federal government shutdown.
  • Basic Needs Assistance is Available: Food access and other essential needs programs are available to support those facing hardship.

To learn more, visit the Federal Government Shutdown Information and Resources page, which will be updated regularly. You can also use Alex311 to get connected with City services or support programs.

The City will continue monitoring the situation in Washington and adjust our response as needed. We are here to help all those who live, work, and visit Alexandria.
