ORANGEBURG, S.C. - Before taking on their first full semester at SC State, 17 new Bulldogs got a head start on college life through the university's 2026 Summer Bridge Program.
The Office of First-Year Experience (FYE), in partnership with Retention and Student Success, recently concluded the weeklong program, allowing incoming freshmen to experience the academic and social demands of college before the start of the fall semester.
For Aaron "A.J." Goodwin, the experience helped replace some of the uncertainty about starting college with confidence.
"I am grateful for the opportunity to attend the Summer Bridge Program," Goodwin said. "The classes challenged me, but they also showed me that I can succeed in college. The counselors, tutors, and staff were always willing to help, and now I feel much more prepared and confident about starting my freshman year."
Students followed a rigorous schedule that closely mirrored the demands of a typical semester. Each day was intentionally structured with college-level coursework, academic support, workshops and activities designed to help students transition successfully into university life.
Participants enrolled in English and history courses, earning college credit while becoming familiar with the expectations of college classrooms. In addition to academics, students benefited from individualized support through dedicated Summer Bridge counselors and tutors who were available throughout the week to provide guidance, encouragement and academic assistance.
Beyond the classroom, students participated in activities that promoted a sense of belonging and strengthened their connections with peers and the campus community. Workshops and engagement opportunities introduced students to university resources while encouraging them to build friendships and develop the confidence needed for a successful first year.
"Our goal is to ensure that students begin their college journey with the academic skills, confidence, and support network necessary to succeed," said Dr. Lisa Sparks, executive director of First-Year Experience. "Our students were eager to learn, actively participated in their classes, and formed meaningful relationships with their counselors, tutors, faculty, and one another. Those connections will continue to support them throughout their first year."
The Summer Bridge Program reflects South Carolina State University's commitment to student success by providing incoming freshmen with an early introduction to college academics, campus resources and peer support.
The 17 participants enter the fall semester with college credits, new friendships and firsthand experience with the expectations of university life.
Classes for SC State's Fall 2026 Semester will begin on Monday, Aug. 10.
