On Wednesday, September 23, Congressman Sanford Bishop traded the halls of Congress for a build site in Napier Heights, joining volunteers and future homeowners as they worked on two new homes for the Clark and Sandifer families. Among those volunteers were Mayor Lester Miller, District 5 Commissioner Andrea Cooke, Economic and Community Development Director Wanzina Jackson, and Neighborhood Program Coordinator Jerry Battle.
The homes are being built by Macon Milledgeville Regional Habitat for Humanity (MMR Habitat) as part of its continued work to expand affordable homeownership opportunities in Macon-Bibb County. During his visit, Congressman Bishop worked alongside volunteers and the families while learning more about Habitat's work in the neighborhood.
Since 2022, MMR Habitat has completed seven new homes in Napier Heights, with ten more planned over the next year.
Congressman Bishop's visit comes as federal funding that would support additional Habitat homes in Napier Heights is being considered as part of the Fiscal Year 2027 appropriations process. The funding has passed the U.S. House of Representatives and is pending in the Senate.
MMR Habitat works with partner families to build safe, decent, and affordable homes throughout Macon-Bibb, Jones, and Milledgeville-Baldwin counties.
The work in Napier Heights is part of a larger effort to strengthen neighborhoods and create pathways to homeownership for families throughout the community.
"We know a house is about so much more than four walls. It's stability, it's an investment in a family's future, and it's a building block for a stronger neighborhood," said Mayor Lester Miller. "Seeing these families out here helping build their own homes is exactly what partnership and community are all about."
