Food and drink industry backs EU push to accelerate energy storage deployment

Today's Tripartite Agreement for Energy Storage comes at a time of heightened energy supply and price volatility and an accelerating climate emergency. For Europe's largest manufacturing industry - food and drink processing - this agreement is an essential step towards scaling up energy storage and strengthening Europe's energy security.

Energy storage is essential to deliver a competitive and resilient net-zero food system. It enables the integration of renewable energy, improves grid stability, and supports access to reliable and affordable electricity for food and drink manufacturers.

This matters for food and drink production because in our industry, around 60% of heat demand comes from low-temperature processes[1], electrification therefore offers major potential, provided there is sufficient storage, grid capacity, and predictable access to clean energy.

The agreement demonstrates a shared commitment to accelerate practical solutions. By aligning public and private actors, it creates a strong foundation for implementation. FoodDrinkEurope stands ready to contribute its expertise to drive progress.

A supportive policy and investment framework will be key. Clear signals, funding and streamlined regulation are essential to unlock investment, accelerate electrification and scale up homegrown renewable energy.
