Congresswoman Ross Statement on Trump’s State of the Union Address

Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Deborah Ross (NC-02) released the following statement:

"Unsurprisingly, tonight Donald Trump was divisive and deceptive.

"He touted a union that is strong and a country where every American can afford to get by and get ahead. But right now, millions of Americans can't afford groceries, rent, utilities, health care, and other basic necessities. Instead of addressing these problems tonight, Trump praised his harmful tariffs that continue to jack up costs and promoted his "Big Ugly Law," which cut taxes for the ultra-wealthy and ripped health care away from millions of Americans.

"When it comes to Donald Trump, promises made are promises broken. He said he would only deport violent criminals. Instead, his administration is targeting parents and breadwinners while terrorizing entire communities. He claimed he would "love and cherish Medicaid." Instead, he signed into law the largest Medicaid cut in history. He said he would release the Epstein files. Instead, he continues to cover for himself and rich and powerful abusers at the expense of innocent victims.

"Tonight's speech was a giant slap in the face to every North Carolinian who is struggling to make ends meet and every American who believes our leaders should tell the truth. Our country deserves better."
