Macon-Bibb welcomes newest GCAPS class

A new group of young leaders is getting an inside look at how local government works!

On Thursday, September 24, Macon-Bibb County welcomed the newest class of the Georgia Civic Awareness Program for Students (GCAPS), kicking off another year of learning, leadership, and hands-on experiences.

GCAPS gives local students the opportunity to step outside the classroom and learn directly from the people who help keep our community moving. Throughout the program, students will meet with County leaders and departments, learn about the different services Macon-Bibb provides, and get a closer look at how decisions are made in local government.

But the program is about more than learning how government works. It also gives students a chance to develop their leadership skills, ask questions, share their perspectives, and better understand the role they can play in their own community.

"We want our young people to know that their voices matter and that they have a place in shaping the future of Macon-Bibb County," says Mayor Lester Miller. "GCAPS gives them an opportunity to see their local government up close, meet the people doing this work every day, and hopefully inspire them to find their own ways to serve their community."

Over the coming months, the students will continue exploring Macon-Bibb County government through interactive sessions and experiences with different departments and community leaders.
