October 3, 2025 (Anchorage, AK) - Lieutenant Governor Nancy Dahlstrom today certified a statewide initiative application following a thorough review by the Division of Elections and the Department of Law. Ballot Initiative 25USCV will now proceed to the signature-gathering phase required for placement on a future ballot.
Formally entitled "An Act requiring that only United States citizens may be qualified to vote in Alaska elections", Ballot Initiative 25USCV seeks to amend Alaska election law to explicitly state that only U.S. citizens who are at least 18 years old, have been residents of Alaska for at least 30 days, and are properly registered to vote may participate in state elections. While Alaska law already requires citizenship to vote, the initiative proposes to reaffirm this requirement in statute.
"Our democratic process is strengthened when Alaskans engage directly in shaping the laws that govern our state," said Lt. Governor Dahlstrom. "By approving this application, we are ensuring that the people have the opportunity to consider this measure through the initiative process established in our constitution."
The approval of the application confirms that the sponsors have complied with the legal requirements necessary to advance their proposal to the signature-gathering stage.
To qualify for the ballot, the initiative must collect signatures equal to 10 percent of the votes cast in the last general election, distributed across at least three-quarters of Alaska's House districts.
Additional information about the initiative process, including signature requirements and deadlines, can be found on the Division of Elections website at elections.alaska.gov
