Students Flip for Spring Concert

By Josh Huddleston

O n March 28, Georgia College & State University hosted the annual spring concert. This year, Jacksonville, Florida, indie-rock band flipturn headlined the show at Centennial Center with openers Futurebirds from Savannah and student-led band MINDA.

Battle of the Bobcats winner MINDA started the evening off with an impressive line-up of covers and new, original songs. Blending the styles of Stevie Wonder, Allman Brothers Band and The Backseat Lovers, MINDA gravitates towards any song they and the audience can have fun with. Flipturn even sneaked out into the audience to see the young local talent.

Futurebirds, a rock and roll band who just celebrated their 15-year anniversary after forming at the University of Georgia, pride themselves on innovation and adaptation. The band's on-stage chemistry is something formed only by considerable time spent creating and growing together.

After the two rollicking opening performances, flipturn took to the stage and immediately a connection was formed between the band and the audience. Flipturn specializes in high-energy performances usually complemented by brilliant stage lighting. The band comprises members Dillon Basse on lead vocals/guitar, Tristan Duncan on lead guitar, Madeline Jarman on bass, Mitch Fountain on synth/guitar, and Devon VonBalson on drums.

After playing popular hits like, "Juno," "August" and "Chicago," the band treated the audience to unreleased music.

When they finished, flipturn thanked the crowd and exited the stage. Despite an already amazing performance, the audience chanted for one last song. The band quickly retook the stage admitting that an encore wasn't planned but because the GCSU crowd was so responsive, they had to oblige.

Flipturn's drummer VonBalson withholds no energy from his playing, even taking his drums into the crowd at one point. He ended the night drenched in sweat, giving away his drumsticks to the audience.

Nights like this prove why GCSU is a special place, willing to go to great lengths to give their students unforgettable experiences. Previous spring concerts featured artists including Quavo, T-Pain and last year's headliner, Wallows. The spring concert is sponsored by the Office of Student Life and the Spring Concert Student Advisory Committee, with the help of Georgia College Public Safety. CAB, the Campus Activities Board, sponsors Battle of the Bobcats annually during Homecoming.
