Rep. Tangie Herring Attends Council of State Governments South Policy Masterclass, Brings Back Strategies for Managing Georgia’s Growth

ATLANTA - State Representative Tangie Herring (D-Macon) recently attended the Council of State Governments South Policy Masterclass. The session brought together state leaders from across the region to discuss strategies for addressing population growth in the American South, with Utah's plan presented as a potential model.

"Georgia's growth presents incredible opportunities, but it also puts real pressure on our infrastructure, natural resources and communities," said Rep. Herring. "We have a responsibility to manage this growth thoughtfully and proactively. The Utah model is a powerful example of how collaboration between state government, the private sector and community organizations can create a sustainable future. We don't have to choose between a strong economy and protecting our quality of life."

Rep. Herring noted the parallels to Georgia's own needs, from protecting water supplies and rural landscapes through zoning to expanding statewide transportation infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing populace. The masterclass in Utah provided a close look at how strategic planning can address these pressures, with sessions focused on water conservation, housing affordability and transportation solutions.

"What was most inspiring was seeing how a unified vision, built on collaboration between public and private sectors, can guide a state through complex challenges," added Rep. Herring. "The 'Envision Utah' initiative is a testament to the power of bringing together state government, private industry, educational institutions and conservation groups. I am eager to begin conversations with local leaders, businesses and conservation groups across our district to build a uniquely Georgian approach that ensures our communities thrive for generations to come."

Representative Tangie Herring represents the citizens of District 145, which includes portions of Bibb and Monroe counties. She was first elected to the House of Representatives in 2024 and currently serves on the Code Revision, Economic Development & Tourism and Urban Affairs committees.
