Portugal celebrated the 40th anniversary of accession to the then European Economic Community with a ceremony held in Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon, which counted on the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel and the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola attending.
The ceremony included the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the site where the Treaty for Portugal to join the then European Communities was signed on 12 June 1985.
During the ceremony, Paulo Rangel thanked Roberta Metsola's presence in Portugal, referring to the President of the European Parliament as "Europe's major ambassador in the world and with the Europeans", and noted the symbolic meaning of the visit in a year where four decades are being celebrated since joining Europe.
The moment was also attended by the Commissioner for the Commemorations of the 40th Anniversary of Portugal's Accession to the European Economic Community Carlos Coelho, members of Government, Portuguese MEP's, and representatives of the Diplomatic corps in Portugal.
Roberta Metsola's trip to Portugal was on 26 and 27 June and included institutional meetings with members of Government and Parliament, civil society representatives, associations, and youths.
