New EV Charging Stations Support Cleaner Transportation at Stony Brook Southampton

Drivers with electric vehicles now have another place to plug in on the East End of Long Island.

Stony Brook University has expanded electric vehicle charging access at Stony Brook Southampton with the installation of four new dual-port Level 2 charging stations in the main parking lot next to Chancellors Hall. The stations provide convenient charging for students, employees, visitors and members of the surrounding community.

The installation follows a university-wide Fleet Electrification Plan that identified Southampton as a priority location for expanded charging infrastructure.

"We recently completed a university-wide Fleet Electrification Plan and have been expanding EV charging infrastructure based on its findings," said Tom Lanzilotta, assistant director of energy management and sustainability in Facilities and Services. "Working with Rich Adkins, director of campus operations and maintenance at the Southampton campus, and his team, we identified a need for EV charging stations at Southampton and moved forward with the installation."

The project adds eight charging ports that can be used simultaneously. While the number of vehicles served each day will vary depending on charging times and demand, Lanzilotta said the infrastructure was designed with future growth in mind.

"The EV charging stations are open to the public and will benefit both the campus community and the broader Southampton community," Lanzilotta said. "As our university fleet transitions to electric vehicles, these charging stations will also support campus facilities operations."

The installation supports Stony Brook's goal of achieving carbon neutrality while helping reduce transportation-related emissions. According to Lanzilotta, the transition to electric vehicles also improves local air quality and lowers operating costs.

Demand for EV charging continues to grow throughout the university. "We monitor EV charging sessions and electricity consumption and have seen usage increase year over year," Lanzilotta said. "Mobility and Parking Services also tracks the number of registered electric vehicles throughout the university, providing additional insight into the growing demand for EV charging."

The university is exploring additional clean transportation initiatives at Southampton, including the potential installation of a Level 3 DC fast charger that would significantly reduce charging times and better support larger electric fleet vehicles, such as buses.

"We are examining opportunities for future clean transportation and faster charging," Lanzilotta said. "This includes potentially installing a Level 3 DC fast charger as a future phase of this project."
