Rep. Gill’s Bill Expedites Removal of Criminal Aliens

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Brandon Gill (TX-26) today introduced the Expedited Removal of Criminal Aliens Act, a bill to strengthen President Trump's border security strategy by giving law enforcement the authority to swiftly remove violent criminal aliens.

"Our number one priority should be to protect American communities," emphasized Rep. Gill."America should never be a safe haven for gang members, terrorists, or violent offenders. Yet, Democrat leaders invited them to invade our country en masse. Serious crimes require decisive consequences: My bill backs President Trump's efforts to capture and deport violent illegal aliens quickly at the behest of Americans across the nation who want their families to thrive in a safe society."

This legislation expands expedited removal authority to cover violent criminal aliens, closing loopholes in the Immigration and Nationality Act. It also mandates detention and expedited removal for gang members, terrorists, and individuals convicted of violent crimes or crimes against vulnerable groups. Additionally, by ensuring that criminal aliens are ineligible for withholding of removal, the bill prevents abuse of asylum protections.

The legislation is the House companion of Senator Ashley Moody's (R-FL) S. 1827that was introduced in May.

"Our first responsibility is to protect Americans. Aliens who join criminal gangs, support terrorism, or commit violent felonies-especially those who prey on vulnerable groups like children and the elderly-have no place in our country. Congressman Gill's Expedited Removal of Criminal Aliens Act provides the necessary tool to ensure these dangerous individuals are removed swiftly and decisively. The Immigration Accountability Project is proud to support this crucial public safety legislation," said Grant Newman, Director of Government Relations, Immigration Accountability Project.

"Congressman Brandon Gill's Expedited Removal of Criminal Aliens Actstrengthens a key law enforcement tool to swiftly remove criminal illegal aliens and is exactly what America needs to keep our borders secure - permanently. Sovereignty isn't an option, it's a foundational requirement for a safe, free, and prosperous Nation," said Cooper Smith, Director of the Center for Homeland Security and Immigration at America First Policy Institute.

Background

  • Current law limits expedited removal primarily to recent border crossers within 100 miles of the border and within 14 days of entry.
  • Criminal aliens-including gang members, terrorists, and those convicted of violent crimes-are currently funneled into slower, standard removal proceedings.
  • Since 2021, over 10 million illegal aliens have entered the U.S., highlighting the urgent need for faster, stronger enforcement tools.
