(Washington, DC) - On Thursday, August 27 at 11 am, Mayor Muriel Bowser will join DC Public Schools, the DC Department of General Services, District leaders and community members to welcome pre-K students to their first day of school and cut the ribbon on the newly modernized J.O. Wilson Elementary School in Ward 6.
This $90.9 million investment has transformed J.O. Wilson Elementary School into a state-of-the-art learning environment with new classrooms-including two music classrooms and two art classrooms, with a fired kiln for ceramics-a turf field and running track, two playgrounds, an outdoor classroom with vegetable garden, indoor and outdoor basketball courts and a new gymnasium with a stage for J.O. Wilson's performing arts program.
The Bowser Administration has long made investing in education a top priority. Since 2015, the District has invested nearly $5 billion in DCPS facilities, including major renovations, modernizations and new construction across all eight wards. And Mayor Bowser is "running through the tape" by continuing to deliver big wins for DC's youngest residents. The FY27 Grow DC Budget includes $269 million for free universal Pre-K, $2.4 million to expand access to the city's Advanced Technical Centers and $3 million to expand high-impact tutoring.
