The Fight for Music's Infrastructure Explores The Challenges & Opportunities That Current Forces Affecting The Industry Bring To Independent Music Business

Today, in partnership with Secretly Distribution, STVDIO releases its first quarterly report, Independent Music 2026: The Fight for Music's Infrastructure. As the research and data company mapping the future of the music industry for artists, managers, labels, founders and investors who need to know what's next, STVDIO finds that although independent music catalog is thriving - accounting for almost 50% of recorded music (46.7% share of global recorded music, 35% of music streaming consumption, 40% of album sales) - the infrastructure underneath the music industry is quietly shifting and consolidating.
After a string of acquisitions in the first half of this year, many independent distributors are now under major label or private equity control, such that a fully "independent" artist can still end up routing their release through major label systems without knowing it. Independent roots are being pulled up, replaced with major label pipes at almost every layer of the stack, while AI and big tech prepare to reset the rules and rewrite music's next royalty system. Therefore, the biggest fight for the independent sector is at the operations level, with 2026 representing a critical moment to fight for independent infrastructure throughout the whole spectrum, from creation tools to distribution, AI licensing, streaming services and fan communication.
Written by Benjamin James, Founder of STVDIO, Independent Music 2026: The Fight for Music's Infrastructure also shows that independent music companies have a rare, unique opportunity to take the lead in AI licensing infrastructure as major label court battles drag on. Highlighting three crucial areas, the report looks at the forces reshaping independent music infrastructure across distribution, AI licensing and new emerging models, as it outlines where indie infrastructure is at risk, but also, optimistically, where it can capitalize, defend and dominate.
"Independent music is the commitment to diverse, boundary-pushing art," Benjamin James reports. "It is vital for diversity, culture, and balancing out homogenisation and consolidation. The same is true for independent infrastructure. We need diverse, independent routes to market and licensing structures. Although the music industry is consolidating into major label and private equity control, there is still meaningful opportunity in 2026 for the independent sector, working in collectives, to defend the infrastructure layer and, in many cases, lead it."

Part 1. The Erosion of Independent Distribution
The music industry is consolidating into major label and private equity control. We map out how the majors have acquired several distributors over the years, leaving fewer independent routes to market.
Part 2. The AI Opportunity for Independents
AI licensing will be the next critical infrastructure layer for the music industry. Major labels and big tech are battling in court at the extremes. The independent sector has an opportunity to lead an ethical, fair middle path, but the opportunity won't be open for long.
Part 3. The Power of Collectives and New Models
Independent collectives like Merlin and ORCA are acting faster and more effectively than ever, while new, niche, independent streaming models are eating into Spotify's dominance.
"Secretly Distribution is thrilled to be supporting STVDIO as they launch this revealing report," says Anna Bond, Chief of Staff at Secretly Distribution. "The music business ecosystem can be difficult to understand for too many rights holders, whether they are self-released artists or decades-old independent labels, and this opacity benefits exactly those who most threaten our sector's independence. STVDIO's work in finding the truth behind the headlines and breaking down complex issues is invaluable."
"Secretly Distribution was the perfect partner for this report," addsBenjamin James, Founder of STVDIO. "They're a fierce champion of both independent music and independent infrastructure, and while they are principled in their ethos, they're also pragmatic about the challenges and opportunities for independent music."
