Investigation report on the 2022 runway overrun at Montréal/St-Hubert Airport, Quebec

Dorval, Quebec, 28 January 2025 -

Today, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) released its investigation report (A22Q0025) into a runway overrun involving a HondaJet HA-420 operated by Skyservice Business Aviation Inc.

On March 7, 2022, while landing at Montréal/St-Hubert Airport, the aircraft touched down in the touchdown zone on a wet runway and the flight crew applied the brakes; however, the deceleration that followed was significantly less than expected for the runway conditions. The aircraft overran the runway and came to a stop approximately 700 feet beyond its end. No one was injured, and the aircraft was not damaged.

The investigation concluded that the runway used was sufficient for the landing. It was not contaminated by ice at the time of the occurrence, there was no hydroplaning, the speed was appropriate, and the operator's stabilized approach criteria were followed. In addition, the aircraft was maintained according to regulations, and no braking system failures were detected by the aircraft's onboard systems during the landing or the post-occurrence inspection. The reason for the reduced deceleration could therefore not be determined.

Following the occurrence, the operator implemented safety actions for its HondaJet HA-420 aircraft operations. The manufacturer modified the aircraft flight manual supplement for landing performance on wet and contaminated runways.

Runway overrunsare on the TSB Watchlist. As this occurrence demonstrates, when a runway overrun occurs during landing, it is important that the aircraft have an adequate safety area beyond the end of the runway to reduce adverse consequences.
