TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - On Tuesday, Cherokee Nation leaders will gather to celebrate the opening of two major projects completed from the $65 million Sequoyah High School Capital Improvement Plan, signed by the Hoskin/Warner administration in late 2024.

The newly completed 51,635 square-foot Academic Building includes features such as a Media Center, pickleball courts, a basketball court, 20 classrooms and a courtyard.

The 65,515 square-foot Multi-Purpose Facility houses an indoor turf practice field with multi-sport striping, collapsible batting cages, a weight room, team classrooms, locker rooms, a cheer practice room, golf simulators and more.

The Sequoyah High School Capital Plan authorized investments into:

  • Remodeled dorms
  • Multi-Purpose facility
  • Auditorium and performing arts center
  • Improvements to the football field
  • A new academic building

The football field improvements, multi-purpose facility and academic building are all complete. The additional improvements will be completed soon.

Cherokee Nation operates Sequoyah High School under a contract with the Bureau of Indian Education on a 90-acre campus within the tribe's capital of Tahlequah.

The school began as the Cherokee Orphan Asylum in 1871. It was operated as a federal Indian boarding school in the 1930s and 1940s until the tribe acquired it in 1985.
