Congressman Lawler Votes to Pass Bipartisan Ban on Congressional Stock Trading

Washington, D.C. - 7/22/26… Today, Congressman Mike Lawler (NY-17), an original cosponsor, voted in support of the Stop Insider Trading Act, bipartisan legislation to prohibit Members of Congress, their spouses, and dependent children from purchasing individual stocks while serving in office. The bill passed the House with a vote of 231 to 198, and now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Specifically, the bill requires Members to publicly disclose any planned sale of covered investments between seven to fourteen days before the transaction occurs, helping ensure greater transparency and accountability in Congress. Members who violate the law would face significant financial penalties and be required to divest prohibited investments.

"Banning congressional stock trading is a simple proposition. If you serve the public, you serve only the public. You don't get to play the market with one hand while writing the rules with the other. You don't get to benefit from the power the people loaned you. This reform is about fairness, for the teacher saving for retirement, the nurse investing in her future, the small business owner trying to build something that lasts. They play by the rules. They deserve a Congress that does the same. This is our chance to say clearly: public service is a public trust. Let's honor it," said Congressman Lawler.
