July 24 North Cascades Fires Update

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. - Firefighting resources continue fire suppression actions on the lightning-caused Luna and Border 2 Fires within North Cascades National Park Service Complex. Both fires are being managed for full suppression, utilizing tactics aligned with firefighter and public safety, commensurate with values at risk and probability of success. Yesterday, air resources were unable to provide aerial delivered water due to strong winds across the area. Aerial delivered water support is available with a Type-2 helicopter and a Type-3 helicopter as weather permits for safe operations. Moderate fire conditions are expected throughout the weekend with cooler temperatures and chances of showers.

Fire activity is moderate today on the Border 2 Fire (approx. 325 acres). The fire continues backing downslope to the northeast and southwest and remains approximately one mile east of Hozomeen. The Olympic Wildland Fire Module continues with brushing, structure protection, and installing water delivery systems around infrastructure and other values at risk. The north end of Ross Lake is closed to recreational use; vessel and foot traffic across the U.S./Canada border is prohibited.

Following numerous days of minimal fire activity and no visible smoke, there's increased fire behavior on the Luna Fire (approx. 125 acres) with single tree torching and uphill runs due to recent hot, dry, and windy weather conditions. Additional area, trail, and camp closures are in place to protect the public.

Weather: Friday will be a warm day with lower humidity than the last few days. Weather conditions are expected to be cooler, higher humidity, and breezy over the fire areas. There could be a chance of showers throughout the weekend.

Fire Restrictions: Fire restrictions are in effect beginning Monday, June 29. Campfires or the ignition of wood, briquettes, or any fuel in fire pits, fire pans, and barbeque grills, are banned in all portions of North Cascades National Park Service Complex. Gas or propane stoves, grills, or lanterns are permitted in campgrounds and wilderness areas for the use of cooking if there is no flammable material within three feet of the device.

Smoke Outlook: Smoke is present with the hot and dry weather and increased fire behavior. Visitors to the area should expect to see smoke impacts in the Ross Lake area. Air quality can change quickly. For current smoke information, visit: https://fire.airnow.gov.

Air Space Restrictions: Drones are prohibited in the area, especially during emergency fire response. If you fly, we can't. Every time a drone is spotted near the fire all aircraft are grounded until we can be sure the drone is clear of this area: http://knowbeforeyoufly.org.
