WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement in response to the Pentagon inspector general's Reporton Signalgate.
"Today's report independently confirms what many of us suspected: Secretary Hegseth's reckless actions put our servicemembers in harm's way. By the grace of God and without the professionalism of one journalist, this situation could have been far worse. Disclosing sensitive, nonpublic, operational information in an unapproved, unsecure network - hours before execution - created great additional risk to U.S. missions.
"This was a rookie mistake that could have had dire consequences for our servicemembers who put their lives on the line for our nation every day. When I want to discuss top secret, classified information with my colleagues, I do so in a secure facility - not on a Signal chain. After initial reports of this national security breach, I called for the firing of Secretary Pete Hegseth and thorough Congressional oversight. Today's report leaves me with no more confidence in the Secretary and his ability to lead our servicemembers.
"I am calling for his immediate resignation. In the coming days, I will use every tool at my disposal to hold him publicly accountable and restore the public's faith in those who lead us and are responsible for our national security."
