SACRAMENTO - Assemblymember Dawn Addis (D-Morro Bay), announced that Assembly Bill 2691, The Public Trust Protection Act, has passed the Assembly floor with overwhelming support.
AB 2691 updates California's standards for eligibility to serve in elected office by adding felony sexual assault and human trafficking to the list of disqualifying convictions.
Under current California law, disqualifying convictions include bribery, embezzlement of public funds, extortion, theft of public money, perjury, and conspiracy to commit these offenses.
On the same day, Assemblymember Addis voted in favor and spoke in support of HR 31 (Celeste Rodriguez), which honors Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Denim Day.
"I'm grateful for the bipartisan support from my colleagues on AB 2691. This is about protecting public trust and standing firm with survivors of sexual assault and sex trafficking," said Addis. "The fact that so many people on both sides of the aisle voted aye on AB 2691 - on Denim Day, a day we stand in solidarity to debunk myths and place responsibility for harm where it belongs - sends a clear and powerful message: California stands strong with survivors."
AB 2691 now heads to the Senate.
Dawn Addis was elected to the California State Assembly in 2022 to represent the coastal 30th Assembly District, which includes San Luis Obispo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz Counties. She is the Chair of the Assembly Budget Subcommittee 1 on Health.
