Kansas City Invests in Portable Charging Station

Kansas City's Neighborhood Services Department is continuing its commitment to a clean environment and sustainability by purchasing a new portable electric vehicle (EV) charging station. The City has been awarded a $150,000 grant from the Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission's Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) program, funded through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Kansas City will provide a $37,500 match.

The grant will fund the purchase of one BEAM EV Solar charging station and trailer. The system is a solar-powered, transportable EV charging unit with battery storage capacity. The EV ARCâ„¢ operates independently of the electrical grid, delivering clean, reliable electricity while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The off-grid and portable features make it especially useful for emergency management as well as City-sponsored and large events such as FIFA Fan Fest.

"Kansas City is committed to sustaining our environment," said Forest Decker, Director of the Neighborhood Services Department. "This investment helps advance that commitment by delivering innovative infrastructure that benefits both residents and visitors."

The project aligns with the City's Climate Protection and Resiliency Plan, which supports initiatives that reduce air pollution and improve transportation efficiency. The ordinance approving the grant and matching funds has been designated with an accelerated effective date to allow timely implementation.
