Public Hearing: Community Development Block Grant

PUBLIC NOTICE

The Charles County Commissioners will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. The hearing will be conducted in a hybrid format, both virtually and in person, at the Charles County Government Building, 200 Baltimore Street, La Plata, Maryland. The purpose of the hearing is to review program performance and provide status updates for the following Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) projects:

1. Gayle's House: CDBG funds were used to purchase a home for victims of domestic violence in Charles County, Maryland.
2. Meals on Wheels Program: CDBG funds were used to support the Meals on Wheels food program.
3. Martha House Repairs: CDBG funds were used to purchase materials to improve the shelter.
4. Fuller House Repairs: CDBG funds were used to purchase materials to improve the shelter.

Individuals or representatives of groups wishing to make oral or written comments are encouraged to attend the hearing. Anyone wishing to testify will be allowed to speak either in person or virtually, but not both.

In-person: Speaker sign-up will begin 30 minutes (1/2 hour) prior to the hearing on Tuesday, May 19^th, 2026, at the Charles County Government Building (200 Baltimore Street, La Plata) and will end at the commencement of the hearing that night.

Virtually: Call (240) 776-6709, starting at 8 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 19^th, 2026, to register to speak. Once registered, citizens will receive a virtual link to join the meeting. Virtual public comments will be heard between 5:30 pm and 6:00 pm on Tuesday, May 19^th, 2026.

If you are not available to speak when your name is announced, we have the right to move on to the next speaker. Each speaker will be allotted three (3) minutes.

Written or voicemail comments may be submitted in lieu of oral testimony, or to expand upon oral testimony, and will be accepted May 8^th, 2026, starting at 8 a.m. through Tuesday, May 19^th, 2026,5 p.m. through:

The Maryland Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program is a federally funded program designed to assist governments with activities directed toward neighborhood and housing revitalization, economic development, and improved community facilities and services. It is administered by the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development.

The Maryland CDBG Program reflects the State's economic and community development priorities and provides public funds for activities which meet one of the following national objectives, in accordance with the federal Housing Community Development Act of 1974, as amended, that:

1. benefit low and moderate income persons and households;
2. aid in the prevention or elimination of slum or blight;
3. meet other community development needs of an urgent nature, or that are an immediate threat to community health and welfare.
