Washington, DC - Congressman Jefferson Shreve (R-IN) introduced the In Good Standing Adoption Act to expand resources for mothers considering adoption and to help ensure children are placed safely and responsibly.
Currently, the federal government does not maintain a public list of adoption agencies, leaving mothers without a reliable way to fully explore their options. Too often, the process begins with a simple Google search - an approach that can expose families to bad actors who manipulate mothers and adoptive families in need. Congressman Shreve's bill addresses this gap by creating a publicly available list of licensed adoption agencies.
Rep. Shreve said, "Too many mothers are forced to rely on unreliable adoption information. This bill brings needed transparency by providing a clear, trustworthy list of licensed agencies - protecting mothers and children."
Celeste Liversidge, Executive Director at Ethical Family Building, said, "This legislation is a meaningful step toward ensuring that expectant parents and adoptive families can make fully informed choices at one of the most consequential times of their lives."
Amy Wolfe, CEO at the National Council for Adoption, said, "In Good Standing will help ensure prospective adoptive families partner with legitimate child-placing organizations. What's more, it'll help drive down the price of adoption, as the tool will throttle foot traffic to predatory third-party baby brokers. Ultimately, the bill, when enacted, will help preserve the integrity of U.S. adoption and ensure it remains a trusted path to permanency for children in need of a loving family."
