The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) applauds the Food and Drug Administration's appointment of Timothy Schell, Ph.D., as the new director of the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM). Schell will lead the CVM in the regulation of animal food, drugs and devices.

"The AFIA congratulates longtime animal food safety proponent Timothy Schell, Ph.D., on his appointment as director of the FDA's Center for Veterinary Medicine," said AFIA President and CEO Constance Cullman. "Dr. Schell's long-standing commitment to science-based decision-making and his deep understanding of the myriad animal feed and pet food ingredients and innovations coming to market will serve the industry and consumers well. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the CVM under his leadership as he implements the Center's Innovation Agenda and ensuring a safe, sustainable and competitive animal food supply."

Schell joined the CVM in 2000 as a reviewer of new animal drugs for swine and poultry. He most recently led the CVM's Office of Surveillance and Compliance. He has also held the position of deputy director of the Division of Animal Feeds from 2009-14 and served in leadership roles as director and deputy for more than a year at CVM's Office of Research.
